1. Coltivazione:
Canapa italiana coltivata da agricoltori certificati. La canapa cresce rapidamente, richiede minime risorse idriche, zero pesticidi, zero erbicidi. Coltivazione sostenibile a basso impatto ambientale.

2. Raccolta:

SUPERIOR TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE

Among the strongest natural fibers in the world
Tensile strength superior to cotton, linen, jute. Ideal for structural applications requiring extreme toughness and durability.

Exceptional long-term durability
Hemp fabrics and products last for decades without degrading. Resistant to abrasion, tearing, and wear. A long-term investment for products that need to last.

UV and weather resistance
Does not degrade with prolonged sun exposure (unlike cotton/linen which yellows). Ideal for outdoor applications, external fabrics, marine ropes.

Resistant to mold, bacteria, and woodworms
Natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Unfavorable environment for microbial proliferation. Does not rot easily, not attacked by woodworms/insects (unlike wood/wool).

Thermal and acoustic insulation
Hollow fiber structure traps air, creating natural insulation. Keeps warmth in winter, coolness in summer. Absorbs sound waves (sound-absorbing). Ideal for green building and comfort padding.

Breathability and moisture regulation
Absorbs up to 15% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet. Releases moisture when the environment is dry. Natural hygroscopic regulation creates thermal comfort in fabrics and building insulation.

HEALTHY NATURAL PROPERTIES

Antibacterial and hypoallergenic
Inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Low allergenicity (rarely causes allergies compared to wool/synthetics). Suitable for sensitive skin, healthcare applications, skin-contact fabrics.

Non-toxic, safe, natural
Zero harsh chemical treatments. Raw fiber without bleaches, dyes, toxic flame retardants. Safe for children, pets, sensitive environments (hospitals, schools).

Natural thermal comfort
Hemp fabrics are cool in summer (breathable, do not retain heat), warm in winter (insulating). Natural thermoregulation improves living comfort and wearability.

SUPERIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Carbon Negative - Sequestering CO2
Hemp absorbs more CO2 from the atmosphere during growth than is emitted throughout the entire production cycle (cultivation, processing, transport). Using hemp means fighting climate change.

Biomass produced in 3-4 months is equivalent to that which a tree develops in 4 years, with equal proportions of sequestered CO2.

Low-impact cultivation

  • Zero pesticides/herbicides: Hemp grows vigorously without chemical necessity
  • Low water consumption: Requires 50% less water than cotton
  • Improves soil: Deep roots aerate the soil, residual biomass enriches humus
  • Crop rotation: Perfect for regenerating tired soils

100% Biodegradable and compostable
At the end of its life, hemp fiber completely decomposes in 6-12 months, returning to nourish the soil. Zero landfill waste. Perfect circular economy.

ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES

Long-term savings
Hemp products last 2-3 times longer than cotton/synthetic equivalents. Slightly higher initial cost amortized by durability. Fewer replacements = savings.

Energy efficiency (construction)
Hemp insulation reduces heating/cooling consumption in buildings. Energy savings of 20-40% compared to traditional insulation. Return on investment 3-7 years.

Added value to the final product
"Made with Italian hemp" is a valuable claim for sustainability-conscious consumers. Market differentiation, possible premium price.

What is the difference between long fiber, short fiber, and hurd?

Long fiber: Outer stem fiber, 5-30cm long, completely free of hurd. Ideal for yarns, textiles, structural padding. Short fiber: Outer stem fiber, 1-5cm long, minimal residual hurd (~5-10%). Ideal for technical applications, mulching, filters, less demanding padding. Hurd: Woody inner part of the stem (core), shredded into flakes. Ideal for green building (mix with lime), animal bedding, mulching. Each component has optimal specific uses.

Is this fiber suitable for hand spinning/manual loom?

Yes, 5-30cm long fiber is perfect for hand spinning (spindle, spinning wheel) or mechanical spinning (home spinning machine). Before spinning, further card the fiber with hand carders to better align it and remove any residual impurities. Raw fiber requires a bit of practice but produces very satisfying, strong, rustic yarns. Ideal for experienced spinners and beginners who want to work with authentic natural fiber.

Can I use this fiber to stuff pillows/mattresses?

Absolutely, yes, it is one of the main uses. Long fiber provides structured, breathable, antibacterial, durable padding. For padding: use the fiber as is (already carded) or re-card lightly to make it softer/fluffier. Advantages vs. synthetic padding: breathable (does not accumulate moisture/sweat), antibacterial (reduces mites/allergens), thermoregulating (cool in summer, warm in winter), ecological and biodegradable.

Is the fiber ready to use or does it require processing?

The fiber is raw carded so it is already clean and combed, ready for most uses. For spinning: ideal as is or with light re-carding. For padding: ready for direct use. For industrial textiles: may require further combing/preparation depending on machinery. For green building: directly usable as loose insulation or mixed with binders for panels. No washing or preliminary treatment necessary.

How should the fiber be stored? Can it mold?

Store in a dry and cool (<25°C) place, protected from humidity. Hemp fiber naturally absorbs ambient moisture (hygroscopic). If the environment is very humid and the fiber remains wet for a long time (weeks), mold can develop. Prevention: store in a closed bag, in a dry, well-ventilated environment. If the fiber accidentally gets damp: spread outdoors (sun or ventilated environment) to dry completely before re-storing. Dry fiber does not mold thanks to its natural antifungal properties.

Is this fiber organic/certified?

The fiber comes from Italian hemp grown without pesticides/herbicides (hemp by nature does not require chemicals). However, we do not yet have formal organic certification (ICEA, CCPB) for the current product. The fiber is nevertheless from controlled sustainable cultivation, EU certified variety, THC <0.2% compliant with regulations. For applications requiring mandatory organic certification, please contact us to check the availability of future certified batches.

Can I use it for green building/home insulation?

Yes, long fiber is excellent for natural thermal/acoustic insulation in green building. Applications: insulation for wall cavities, attics, floors, ceilings. It can be blown in loose, hand-laid, or compressed into panels with natural binders. Advantages: breathable (regulates humidity, prevents mold/condensation), insulating (lambda ~0.040 W/mK), carbon negative, non-toxic, durable.

Does the fiber shed "lint" or particles during use?

Natural raw fiber may release minimal short fibers/particles during initial handling (normal). After the first processing (carding, spinning, installation), shedding drastically reduces. To minimize: work in a ventilated environment, shake fiber outdoors before use, wear a mask if sensitive to organic dusts (precaution, it is not toxic but some people prefer). Once integrated into the final product (fabric, sewn padding, building panel), the fiber is stable and does not shed.

Can I dye/color hemp fiber?

Yes, hemp fiber accepts natural dyes well (vegetable, mineral) and standard textile dyes. Natural dyes: madder (red), indigo (blue), turmeric (yellow), walnut hull (brown) work well. Note: dyeing before spinning is easier (loose fiber absorbs evenly) vs. dyeing finished yarn/fabric.

Do you offer technical support for specific applications?

Yes, we provide free technical consultation to help you choose the correct fiber and optimize its use. Contact us describing your application and we will guide you on: necessary quantity, fiber preparation, application techniques, equipment suppliers if needed. For complex B2B projects (e.g., composite development, industrial textile production), we can connect you with specialized technical partners. Technical support: info@canapuglia.it

Is the fiber suitable for automotive use/technical composites?

Yes, long hemp fiber is increasingly used in bio-composites for automotive, marine, and sports. It replaces glass fiber in applications where lightness, sustainability, and carbon footprint reduction are sought. Applications: car interior panels (doors, dashboards), marine components (hulls of small boats, non-structural parts), sports equipment (boards, rackets). Advantages: excellent strength-to-weight ratio, biodegradable at end-of-life, processable with bio-resins (vegetable epoxies, bio-polyurethanes). For specific technical projects, contact us for support and potential co-development.
